Watch a lion majestically dance under a raging flame!A soul-stirring Shinto ritual that has been passed down for around 850 yearsTakabuku no Okashira Jinji, which is also referred to simply as Jinji, is a Shinto ritual for ensuring good health and banishing evil spirits that has been passed down for over 850 years. This ritual reaches its climax during the uchimatsuri. When the sun goes down, a drum can be heard ponderously beating in the darkness, and men beneath a furiously burning torch shout with powerful voices: “Rokuya!” “Sanya!” The Okashira (sacred lion’s head) is held aloft and shaken dramatically from side to side as the lion dances, making for a genuinely breathtaking sight. Visitors are in for a profound experience that mere words simply cannot describe. An epic battle between a fleeing whale and the pursuing kujirabune (whaling ships)! Experience a traditional kujirabune event held to pray for a huge catch as well as wealth and positionDuring this unique and traditional kujirabune (whaling ship) event, which is held every September at Toride Shrine in Yokkaichi City, the pursuit of a whale is simulated on land. Lavishly decorated floats called kujirabune are controlled to bravely chase down a paper-mache whale and then kill it as a nagashi-style song plays to accompany the action. The floats are skillfully controlled by four teams—Kitajima, Nakajima, Minamijima, and Furukawa-cho—as the vicious battle between the whaling ships and whale plays out. There is one breathtaking scene after another, including the way the whaling ships violently rock as they are battered by giant waves sent their way by the whale as well as the harpoons launched by the hadashi (whaling captains).Date:Every year on the second Saturday in FebruaryPlace:Misonochotakabuku areaCar: About 12 minutes by car from the Ise-Nishi I.C., which is on the Ise ExpresswayCultural Policy Division, Ise City Information Strategy BureauDate:Every year on the fourth Saturday and Sunday in SeptemberPlace:Toride ShrineTrain: About seven minutes on foot from Kintetsu-Tomida Station, about five minutes on foot from JR Tomida StationTomida Kujirabune Preservation Society開催日:毎年2月の第2土曜日場所:御薗町高向地区車:伊勢自動車道「伊勢西I.C.」 During the day, dancers called Sugidayu dance the Shichi Okoshi no Mai, which is based on the legend of how Susanoo-no-Mikoto slayed the Yamata no Orochi, as an offering. Each kujirabune float is decorated with its own ornamentation, including lavish sculptures and crimson cloth embroidered with gold thread depictions of dragons, orcas, waves, etc. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
