For over 700 years, people have come to pray for the fulfillment of wishes, protection from misfortune, and purification at birth. It is a traditional art form that has been carefully passed down from parent to child, and from child to grandchild for generations as a symbol of harmony between the gods and people and is held every year from November to March in 15 districts of Kitashitara County (Toei town, Shitara town, and Toyone village). Held in midwinter, when the power of the gods and spirits is weakened, this flower festival is meant to be a rebirth that calls forth the power of the spirits of the earth. During the Hanamatsuri Festival, a building called a Hanayado is adorned with a sacred rope and decorated with cut grass made from five-colored cut paper. The earthen floor of the building is then turned into a dancing garden, where kettles are set up and about 30 various dances are performed throughout the night to welcome the eight million gods and goddesses. The dancers and the audience come together to enliven the dancing garden with shouts of "Tehohe, Tehohe," enchanting spectators.
