The lion dance, performed on a roughly 12-meter-high tower, attracts many people with its power and beauty. The origin of the lion dance is said to be a ritual as a prayer for a good harvest that was introduced from Noritake-no-sho Oakimura village (now Oakimachi, Nakamura-ku, Nagoya City) more than 400 years ago. The ladder lion dance was first clearly recognized during the Horeki era (1751-1764), when the headman of Owaki Village, Yogen Aiba, encouraged the dance, which then flourished. In the Bunkyu period (1861-1864), the lightweight performance of single and suspended bamboos was added to the form that has been handed down to the present day.
