Two pairs of lions climb a ladder and perform a dance atop a 9-meter-high yagura!Asakura ladder lion dance is a folk art that has been handed down for about 420 years. It is said to have originated in 1598, when farmers in the village of Asakura defeated wild boars that were destroying their crops by attacking them with ladders. In celebration of the good harvest the following year, and to console the spirits of the boars, they performed a lion dance in which the lion climbs a ladder. At the annual festival held at Musan Shrine, two pairs of young men wearing curtains with lion heads of male lions on them perform the “Hanare technique” to some musical accompaniment on a 31-step ladder and a 9-meter-high turret. The performance includes a fortune dance (a song for praying for a good year), an oar-top dance (a song for hard work), and a gratitude dance (a song for a bountiful year). The Asakura Ladder Lion Youth Association is a group of young people, ranging from high school students to 24-year-olds, all of whom are involved in the transmission and preservation of performance techniques and the training of successors. Learning to perform the ladder lion dance carries a great deal of risk, so they practice hard to pass on the traditional culture of the community.
