Experience nenbutsu chanting and the sound of a gong ringing out under the moonlight! A traditional prayer event accompanied by dancing during which dancers in geta (traditional wooden sandals) keep time with their feetThis Bon event has been passed down in the small village with only around 20 households in mountains around 500 meters above sea level. Starting around 7:00 pm, yonenbutsu (nighttime Buddhist chanting), which is intended to honor one’s ancestors, is held. Local people form a procession under the moonlight, and, as they walk, they occasionally stop to hit their gong and quietly recite a Buddhist chant. If you focus on really listening to the chanting, you just might find yourself drawn into a mental state that cannot be described in words. The chanting is followed by the performance of a dance called Teodori, which is intended to be entertaining. No shamisen or other musical instruments are used, and the dancers, who are wearing geta, instead keep time with their feet, staying in rhythm with the leading singer. Some of the countless lanterns of all sizes are even 10 meters tall! Be amazed at the brilliant sights, such as the carrying of portable shrines and the children’s parade.A grand autumn festival offering thanks for a year of good harvest and held on the grounds of Myogon-ji Temple, also known as “Toyokawa Inari”. The event is also called the “Grand Lantern Festival” because of the countless lanterns that light up the grounds, including some that are roughly 10 meters in height and 5 meters in diameter. During the day, there is a prayer meeting held by a Buddhist priest as well as the carrying of portable shrines. It is crowded with a procession of followers wearing white fox masks, children in costumes, court musicians, priests, and portable shrines that appear to the shouts of “Good harvests! May we have good harvests for 300 years!” All of the lanterns are lit in the evening to create a surreal sight of delicate lights that will captivate you.Date:Every year on August 10 and 15Place:Heisho-ji TempleOn the date of the event, reservation-only buses run from the Kōrankei Miyamachi Parking Lot to the event site.
