An exciting festival in Toyohashi to welcome springThis festival is held every year on February 10 and 11 at Akumi Kanbe Shinmeisha Shrine. This colorful Shinto ritual features a number of events, including kagurako (dancers) who hold bells and hemp in their hands as they dance the Isuzu Kagura, a Blue Demon that dances the Iwato Mai in rhythm with the Iyasaka Hoi Hoi song, an event called Kooni Jibumi, during which a small demon does some comical steps, and other events that mix tradition and humor. The climax is the Tengu to Aka Oni no Karakai event, during which the Tengu uses every trick at its disposal to face the raging Red Demon. The spectators watch their battle with bated breath, eager to see the outcome.One of the three great riverside festivals of Japan, with different festivities during the night and morning! Be amazed at the sight of musical performances being given on boats being rowed.This festival is held at Tsushima Shrine, which has a history going back around 600 years, and is one of the three great riverside festivals of Japan. The event includes both a surreal evening festival and a magnificent morning festival. During the evening festival, which is held on Saturday, the paper lanterns of five makiwara (straw) boats are lit starting around 6:30 pm. They then depart from Kurumakodo (the place where the festival boats are stored) around 8:15 pm to embark on their journey, accompanied by the sound of Tsushima flutes. The sight of the light from the makiwara boat lanterns reflecting off the surface of the river water is truly dreamlike.
