It is considered one of Japan’s three most unique festivals. During the procession of the portable shrine, Ooyakko and a daimyo procession join the parade, preserving the magnificent and impressive spectacle of the grand procession as it appeared 300 years ago. It is also known as the “Obi (Sash) Festival”, which is derived from “Ooyakko” (footmen). The footmen, with swords hanging on both sides, glossy sashes on their handles, and strips of paper on the tip of their swords in prayer for safe childbirth, are a must-see. They march through the streets as they hold purple umbrellas with their left hands while yelling out unique chants and performing unusual dance moves. The Owatari parade, which is held on the last day of the festival, is one kilometer long.
