Various festivities are held at Mishima Taisha Shrine during the festival, including performances of Shagiri, Ohayashi and Noheibushi Dance in the area around the shrine. In 1180, at the end of the Heian period [794-1185], Minamoto no Yoritomo raised an army to revive the Minamoto clan on the occasion of the August 17 festival. The Yoritomo Flag Raising Procession is also held in commemoration of this historical event. Mishima bayashi is made up of Ohayashi and Shagiri and is said to have been created during the Tenbun era (1532-1554) of the Sengoku period by Kowaka Yosodayu, a dancer at Mishima Shrine. During the Edo period, the pulling of floats began and a system of designated towns for each festival was established. The tradition of Mishima-bayashi is handed on to the next generation by the Mishima-Bayashi Preservation Society. In the Mishima Grand Festival of today, the floats of the town on duty are purified after a Shinto ritual is performed at Mishima Taisha Shrine, and each offers a dedication performance of Kagura-shoden. The floats are then pulled around the city and performances are held at various locations. When night comes, all the floats of the town on duty gather at the head shrine, where they compete with each other, and the festival reaches its climax.
