Dancing deer, the sounds of songs, and kyōgen (traditional comic theater) for flavor! A mysterious Bon dance with an approximately 400-year history lives onEvery year, on the night of August 15, the Tokuyama Bon Dance Festival is ritualistically held at Sengen Shrine. The festival consists of three types of dances: the Shikan Mai (deer dance), which is a bouncy number performed by dancers dressed as deer in time with upbeat musical accompaniment, the Hiyai Odori, an elegant dance to the rhythm of kouta songs by dancers in loose obi (sashes), and kyogen (traditional comic theater), during which Raiko and Shinsoga are performed. As the sounds of drums and flutes ring out over the grounds to provide musical accompaniment, the dancers perform energetically, shining in the light. With this magical scene before you, you might find yourself feeling like time itself has stopped.Witness this wild dance of barely-clad men wearing only grass skirts the “demon dance” is truly a strange and unique sight to see!This annual festival is held over an eight-day period at Mitsuke Tenjin Shrine (Yanahime Shrine). Starting at 10:00 am, the Urayasu no Mai is performed by maihime (dancing girls), and other annual events are held. Later in the evening, the Naked Festival begins. Starting at 9:00 pm, a crowd of barely-clad men parades down the street to gather at the nearby shrine. Just after 11:00 pm, they enter the hall of worship, where they perform their rousing demon dance. This wild dance of practically naked men is truly a strange and unique sight to see.
