It is said to have originated in 719, when the monk Gyoki visited the area and dedicated a statue of the Kannon (Goddess of Mercy). The positions of head of the festival, head of Noh and the Noh troupe have been handed down orally from generation to generation to the eldest son of the family that holds each respective office. The actual Dengaku festival [ritual music and dancing in the shrine] is held every year from the rising of the moon on the 18th day of the first lunar month to the next morning. It is characterized by very strict devotional precepts and preparations before the performance. The head of the festival begins his devotional activities on January 7th of the lunar calendar (11 days before the festival), and the Noh performers also begin their devotional activities one week before.The festival begins on the morning of the 17th day of the first month of the lunar calendar with the public unveiling of a Buddhist image, and ends with the most solemn ceremony known as shizume. Dengaku is performed only by men, and the women who have supported it behind the scenes have made tremendous efforts to support the men by bearing and raising boys and passing on vegetarian cuisine from mother to daughter-in-law.
