An Autumn Day Full of SmilesThe Oyada Hinkoko Festival is a simple puppet show offered at the annual festival of Oyada Shrine in Mino City on the third Saturday of October and the following Sunday (on the fourth Sunday of November, “Hinkoko no Mai” is performed by the Oyada Hinkoko Festival Preservation Society). The story goes that a farmer sowing wheat was swallowed by a giant snake, and that Susanoo-no-mikoto killed the snake. This puppet play was made as a prayer for the protection of agriculture and a good harvest. The two-meter tall puppets, made to look like scarecrows, dance to a musical accompaniment that sounds like “hinkoko, hinkoko,” in a simple and humorous manner. A curtain is placed on a hillside, and the puppeteers use dolls supported by sticks and swing them widely.
