Since the middle of the Edo period, Shirotori’s Haiden Odori has been danced in the precincts of temples and shrines during the Obon season in various areas of Shirotori Town. Today, it is performed only at Shirotori Shrine, Maedani Hakusan Shrine, Nozoe Kifune Shrine. In the evening, large faceted lanterns are hung in the shrine’s hall and a simple dance is performed under the light of the lanterns. This Bon odori dance is nurtured by Hakusan’s natural blessings and religious culture. The dance is characterized by “hands in a row, feet on the floor,” and some dances that have already ceased to be performed in their birthplace have been handed down to the next generation. The Shirotori Odori Association was established in 1947, just after the war, and for nearly 80 years since then, it has maintained the basic line of “handing down the old dances” from the time of its establishment. Every year on the night of August 16 at Maedani Hakusan Shrine, on the nights of August 17 and the third Sunday in September at Shirotori Shrine worship hall, and on the night of August 20 at Nozoe Kifune Shrine, “Shirotori’s Haiden-odori dance” is performed.
