The sight of thousands of people dancing in a circle throughout the night is the very essence of Gujo Odori.月上旬まで約30夜以上にわたって踊り続けられ、特に8月13日〜16日の4日間は町中挙げて徹夜で踊る。江戸時代初期に郡上八幡城主が領民の融和を図るため、上下貴賤のへだてなく、お盆に踊ることを奨励したのが始まりといわれている。郡上踊の最大の特徴は、「見る踊り」ではなく、「一緒になって踊り楽しむもの」ということであり、八幡町の通りや広場などに屋形が設けられ、その周囲で、老若男女、観光客も地元の人も一つの輪になって踊りを楽しむ。踊りの種類も10曲と多く、ゆったりとした調子からテンポの速いもの、三味線・笛・太鼓などのお囃子があるものや、歌い手だけのものなど多様である。踊りの順番は、その時の踊り場の様子を見て、踊り手や囃子方らが疲れないように仕組まれるなど工夫されている。毎年20万〜30万人の参加者で賑わう。A summer night in Gujo; your heart dancing in a circleGujo Odori is a Bon dance that has been performed in Hachiman-cho, Gujo City for more than 400 years. It is danced for more than 30 nights from mid-July to early September every year, and especially for four days from August 13 to 16, when the whole town dances all night long. It is said to have originated in the early Edo period when the lord of Gujo Hachiman Castle encouraged people to dance during Obon regardless of their status in order to promote harmony among the people of his domain. The most distinctive feature of Gujo Odori is that it is not a dance to be passively watched, but to be actively danced and enjoyed together, with yakata (stands) set up in the streets and squares of Hachiman-cho. Both tourists and locals, male and female, young and old, form a circle around the yakata to enjoy the dance. There are as many as 10 types of dances, ranging from slow and fast-paced ones to those with shamisen, flutes, and drums, as well as those with singers only. The order of the dances is arranged according to the condition of the dance floor at the time, so that the dancers and musicians do not get tired.
