Small portable drums charge at an enormous taiko drum!An unusual earthly festival that is filled with excitement until late at nightAn annual celebration of Keta Wakamiya Shrine, boasting a history of about 400 years. It is composed of three grand rituals consisting of a Shinto ritual with traditional procession of portable shrines, a “rousing drum” parade, and a procession of floats, along with an old massive picture scroll. The highlight of the festival is the “rousing drum” parade. The clashing between the huge taiko drum and the smaller portable drums throughout the town is spectacular. The sight of the small portable drums trying to clash into the huge taiko drum and those trying to guard it right in front of you fills the town of Furukawa with excitement until late at night.Thirteen floats proceed majestically through the castle town The performances on the stages atop them are a must-see!The Ogaki Festival is one of the Mino region’s most famous events and has been passed down in the castle town of Ogaki for over 370 years. The festival is a rare example of an event that combines parade floats (yama) received from a feudal lord with floats made by the people, and the event also shows how the clockwork arts of the east and the dancing of the west intermingled to form a unique festival culture, so the festival was designated as one of Japan’s Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties in 2015. In 2016, the festival was also added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. During the shigaku (rehearsal) on Saturday, there is a hōgei performance (in front of Hachiman Shrine) and a kakegei performance (in front of city hall), and then the parade floats are carried freely through the city.
