The origin of the festival dates back to the Hida reign of the warring feudal lord Kanamori (1585-1692), and the yatai date back to the early 1700s. The skill of the master craftsmen is evident from the floats, such as the one with the Karakuri dedication, which showcases the skillful movements of the puppets, and the backstage carriage, which is decorated with tricks. The procession of several hundred people in traditional costumes, including a tokeiraku and guardians wearing hakama, makes its way around the festival area, led by a musical accompaniment, gagaku, and lion dances. At night, each float decorates the darkness with as many as 100 lanterns. The Takayama Festival is a time when the enthusiasm of the Hida people rises.
