It is said to have originated when the Genji warriors danced it to celebrate their victory in the Genpei wars. Later, in the middle of the Tokugawa Shogunate, there was a drought, and farmers performed this dance as a form of Kagura (Shinto music and dance) as a prayer for rain to a local deity. It was then called Amagoi Odori (rain dance).Later, the dance was passed down through the generations as a fertility dance, but it gradually declined with changes in social conditions. In order to revive the dance, which had been in decline, it was named “Tanigumi Odori,” and in 1952, a preservation society was established to carry on the dance as it is known today.The Tanigumi Odori dance is performed with a “shinai,” a four-meter-long piece of bamboo covered with five-colored paper in the shape of a phoenix’s feather on the back, and a drum approximately 70 cm in diameter on the belly.
