An epic battle that rages in a narrow alleyThe Tsuruga Nishimachi Tug-of-War features a massive, approximately 500-kilogram rope that is around 55 meters long and 25 centimeters thick. A crowd gathers to pack Nishimachi-dori, a street lined with houses and shops, and they are divided into two teams—Ebisu and Daikoku—for an intense contest. The instant the giant rope touches the ground, the competitors simultaneously grab it and begin to pull with all their might. It is said that a victory for Ebisu means a bountiful harvest from the sea, while a victory for Daikoku means a bountiful harvest from the earth, so everyone awaits the outcome of the “war” with bated breath. As the competitors shout and test their strength against their opponents, everyone watching can feel the excitement in the air.A mysterious dance performed once every two years, with performers wearing golden masks dancing to ancient court music.Once every two years, the Itosaki Buddhist dance is performed at Itosaki-ji Temple. The dance begins with a solemn chant performed by women. Before long, the sound of drums and gongs can be heard ringing out. Guided by the sound, the dancers proceed to the stage: the Kadomamori in white robes, the Nenbosatsu in blue robes, and dancers in black robes with golden masks and crowns.
