Train: “Katsuyama Station” on the Echizen Railway Katsuyama Eiheiji Line / Car: “Katsuyama IC” on the Chubu Jukan ExpresswayKatsuyama City Future Creation Division 0779-88-8114どんど焼きの真っ赤な炎が凍てつく冬空に美しく燃え盛る。Dondo-yaki, the burning of old New Year's decorations, offers a striking contrast between the bright red flames and the cold blue winter sky.われる。勝山市の各町内に12基の櫓を建て、その上の笛・鉦・三味線・太鼓の音と軽快なテンポの囃子に乗り、赤い長襦袢姿の大人たちが子供を交えて、夜半まで賑やかに浮かれ踊る。この様は、全国的にも特異な奇祭といえる。町内には、豪華な櫓を中心に、神格を表す大松飾り、干支にちなんだ作り物、絵行灯、押絵額等が飾られ、絵巻物のようになる。日曜日の夜になると、各町内の御神体が九頭竜川の弁天河原に集められ、市内の神明神社で採火した御神火を一斉に点火する。真っ赤な炎が凍てつく冬空に美しく燃え盛る中、見物客は五穀豊穣・無病息災を祈願する。このどんど焼きで神を送り、2日間の勝山左義長は終了する。これを境に勝山に春の足音が聞こえてくる。A harbinger of spring in the Okuetsu regionThe Katsuyama Sagicho Festival, held annually on the last Saturday and Sunday of February, boasts the dondo-yaki ritual in which New Year’s decorations from the previous year are burned in a bonfire. The custom of dondo-yaki has been going for more than 300 years. A total of twelve turrets are set up specifically for the festival in the different districts of Katsuyama City. Performers sit atop these turrets playing instruments such as flutes, bells, shamisen, and drums to a light tempo. People wearing long red kimono-style costumes perform this spirited dance together with children until late at night. Not only is this festival considered an unusual sight in the region, but across Japan as well. Thanks to the ornate turrets—decorated with New Year’s pine decorations representing the deities, along with Japanese zodiac handicrafts, picture lanterns, raised cloth pictures, and more—the townscape takes on the look of a traditional picture scroll. On Sunday night, shintai (sacred objects believed to contain Shinto deities) in the city’s various districts are brought together at Bentengawara on the banks of the Kuzuryu River. Here, they are burned simultaneously using a sacred fire first lit at Shinmei Shrine in Katsuyama City. As the intense red flames burn contrastingly against the cold winter skies, visitors pray for an abundant harvest and for protection against illness and disaster. The gods are sent off with this dondo-yaki ritual, marking the end of the two-day Katsuyama Sagicho Festival.
