It is one of Japan's three great classical manzai comic dances, characterized by its unique performance of New Year's blessings.写真提供：越前万歳保存会写真提供：越前万歳保存会写真提供：越前万歳保存会写真提供：越前万歳保存会写真提供：越前万歳保存会写真提供：越前万歳保存会福芸で、起源は定かではないが、約1500年前、後の継体天皇の前で「宇津保の舞」を演じたところ、愛馬の病気が回復したことから、「野宇津保万歳」の称号を賜ったのが始まりと伝えられている。安土桃山時代には、加賀藩主・前田氏の祖である前田利家など多くの武将に親しまれ、越前の各地を回って披露していたと伝わっている。江戸時代には現在のような形態になったと考えられており、越前の各藩だけでなく、加賀までもお祝いして回ったといわれている。毎年1月1日に越前市にある味真野神社で初舞が行われる。扇を持った大夫（たゆう）と太鼓を持った才蔵（さいぞう）が祝言を言い立て、舞を行う。すり太鼓と呼ばれる小さな太鼓を、弓型に作ったバチでするように叩いて演じるのが特徴である。演目は、かつて48段あったといわれているが、現在は8段ほどが継承されている。Performances of blessings to celebrate the New Year in EchizenEchizen Manzai is a New Year's performance of blessings that has been passed down in the Ajimano and Kamiootsubo areas of Echizen City. The origin of the art is not known, but it is believed to have begun about 1,500 years ago, when a performance of Utsubo no Mai in front of future Emperor Keitai helped his beloved horse recover from illness, leading to the title of No-Utsubo Manzai. It was popular among many military commanders during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1600), including Toshiie Maeda, the feudal lord of Kaga and the founder of the Maeda clan, and was performed in various places in Echizen. It is believed to have taken its present form during the Edo period (1603-1867) and celebrations were held not only in the various domains of Echizen, but also in Kaga as well. The first dance is held at Ajimano Shrine in Echizen City on January 1 every year. A master(Tayu) with a fan and a supporting character (Saizo) with a drum offer congratulatory words and perform a dance. The performance is characterized by the beating of small drums, called suridaiko, with a drumstick in the shape of a bow.
