Kiriko are rectangular faceted lanterns that can weigh up to 4 tons and reach 16.5 meters tall. When night falls, the illuminated kiriko lanterns create a magical atmosphere, decorated with ink brush strokes and pictures of warriors. These huge sacred lights protect the gods as they accompany the portable shrines on their parade through the town, with soul-stirring and dynamic dances and hearty shouts. Although collectively known as the Kiriko Festival, the events are quite diverse. Each is believed to have developed in its own unique way as people in the different areas competed over the size, decorations, and number of kiriko lanterns.
