It is performed by six fearsome players wearing masks, including a yasha, a female ghost, and a Daruma doll, all of whom take turns beating drums and together wildly. In 1576, Uesugi Kenshin's forces invaded Noto. An elder of the village came up with a plan to drive them away by beating drums while wearing strange masks and seaweed. The nighttime attack drove them away, and the villagers attributed this to divine grace. Since then, Gojinjo-daiko drummers have led the mikoshi (portable shrine) at the Hakusan Shrine Grand Festival (Nafune Festival) in Nafune Town, held every year from July 31 to August 1, and it has become customary to offer thanks to the local deity. The rhythm of the taiko starts slowly, then speeds up a little, and ends with the fastest beat, in three stages: jo, ha, and kyu, which are repeated many times. Performers add their own unique skills, such as poses, strange voices, gestures and movements appropriate to their masks. Compared to taiko drumming in other regions, the rhythm, gestures, and other aspects create an unusual atmosphere that is uniquely powerful.
