The main feature of the performance is that the pole-wielders challenge the lion to a fight with wooden clubs, swords, and other weapons in their hands, and in the end, the lion is finally killed. The origin of the Kaga lion dance is unknown, but it is believed that the number of performers increased rapidly in the late Edo period (1603-1868), and each town competed with each other to perform the lion dance during festivals. In Kanazawa City, each town has its own unique lion dance, and the lion heads as well as Kaya are made using traditional Kaga craft techniques. The Kaga lion dance is performed during festivals, when the lion dance and the spectators come together to create a lively atmosphere.
