Buddhist and Shinto deities adorn a special altar set up to welcome the gods of the sea -The traditional Tsukiyama ritual: honoring ancient beliefs of the people of the sea-In Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture, two traditional festivals featuring a float, one called “Hikiyama” and the other “Tsukiyama”, have been passed on as a single festival as part of the annual autumn festival at Hōjōzu Hachimangu shrine. The Tsukiyama festival is particularly unusual in Japan. Deities called the “Tsukiyama”, who come from the ocean, are invited to a temporary altar on the shrine grounds. On October 2nd, decorative dolls, including representations of onbaba and four protectors of Buddhism (Vaisravana, Dhrtarāstra, Virūdhaka, Virūpāksa) and more, will be shown to the public.
