A festive song called Mugiyabushi is sung in the area that links Gokayama with Shirakawago in Hida. The lyrics are said to have been written by a Heike warrior who was defeated in the Battle of Kurikara. He fled from his pursuers, settled in Gokayama, and began singing the song to reminisce about his former glory. Kokiriko Uta has been passed down in Kaminashi, Nanto City and is said to be a fusion of the sangaku entertainment form brought to Japan from China in the Nara period, and taiko drumming which was established even earlier. One notable feature is the playing of the sasara, a traditional percussion instrument used in folk songs, during the dance, as well as the kokiriko, in which two bamboo poles are struck in time with the singing. The cheerful songs and beautiful depiction of nature allow you to enjoy sublime public entertainment from the medieval and early modern era. In 1973, Gokayama Song and Dance was selected as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset in Japan. The Gokayama Mugiya Festival is held in Shimonashi on September 23rd, and the Kokiriko Festival is held on the grounds of Hakusan-gu Shrine in Kaminashi on September 25th and 26th, with performances from all the folk song preservation societies in the Etchu Gokayama region.
