The mountainous Gokayama region is known as a “treasure trove of folk songs.” The representative folk song, Mugiyabushi, is said to have originated with the Heike clan’s exiles who escaped from the Battle of Kurikara-toge. The lyrics of Mugiyabushi describe simple scenes of farm work while also expressing the feelings of the fallen warriors. The costume for the Mugiya Dance is inspired by samurai, with black crested Kimono and Hakama, a white sash, and a sword worn at the waist. The dance is distinctive for how dancers spin their straw hats lightly in time with the lively Mugiyabushi tune and stop them perfectly in place.
