Every year from September 1 to 3, the Bonbori lanterns light up the town, and dancers in matching happi coats or yukata as well as woven hats dance and parade through the town to the accompaniment of local songs, shamisen, and kokyu (bowed Japanese violin). The origin of Owara is said to date back to the Genroku period (1688-1704) of the Edo period (1603-1868), when silent dancers performed the graceful and refined dance that has been passed down for more than 300 years along the streets of the town, which are often hilly, to a melody filled with a sense of sadness. The elegant and graceful women’s dance, the energetic men’s dance, the shamisen and drums, and the melody of the kokyu (Japanese violin), which plays a mournful tone, invite visitors into a world of mysterious beauty.
