There are plenty of things to see, including the Suwa Shrine Tatemon Festival (a registered UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) and the serikomi-choroku traditional folk song.である。たてもんは三方にお供え物を山と積んで神前に奉納した形や、帆を上げた漁船をかたどったものと言われる。高さ約16mもの柱に90余りの提灯を全体が三角形となるように飾り付ける。車輪のない舟形のたてもん７基を曳きまわす美しい光の渦、氏子たちのほとばしる気迫、テンポの早い祭りばやしは、魚津が誇る夏の風物詩。“せり込み蝶六”は魚津を代表する盆踊り。蝶六は浄土真宗の仏教口説きが起源とされ、越後の瞽女唄の影響により変化したものと言われている。毎年お盆になるとお寺やお宮の境内で笠や提灯などを持ち、先祖の御魂を祈り、豊年を祈願して踊り明かすようになった。扇子をもって激しいリズムに合わせた極楽蝶が舞うような踊り姿からその名が付いたと言われている。現在は、毎年８月に開催される「じゃんとこい魚津まつり」において”せり込み蝶六踊り街流し”が行われている。当初は約500名の参加だったが、現在では企業、地区などの参加を得て約2,500名の規模になっている。The biggest event in Uozu City and a summer tradition The Tatemon Festival, dating back some 300 years, has traditionally been performed by community members associated with the Suwa Shrine as a prayer for the safety of ships and boats, and for a plentiful catch. The “tatemon” referred to here is a triangular-shaped structure of offerings to the gods. The shape is also believed to be based on that of a fishing boat with its sails up. The triangular structure, standing roughly 16 meters high, is decorated with some 90 lanterns on pillars. Uozu’s summer seasonal traditions include a beautiful optical vortex pulling seven wheel-less boat-shaped tatemon, the spirited dancers of the local shrine community, and the fast-tempo festival music. Serikomichoroku is a leading bon-odori dance of Uozu. The choroku is believed to originate with Jodo Shinshu Buddhist scripture-reading, subsequently changing with the influence of the travelling blind female performers of the Echigo region. Every year during the Obon festival, people don bamboo hats and carry lanterns, performing dances on temple or shrine grounds in a form of prayer for peace for the souls of their ancestors, and for a bountiful year. The dancers hold fans and engage in dynamic movements that can be likened to tropical butterflies, which is where the dance gets its name.
