The local children pass on tradition! A traditional festival where god dolls are burned to ward off evil.A traditional ritual deeply rooted in the region, related to the faith of deities that prevent the invasion of evil at village boundaries while warding off disasters and evil, and the fire festivals of the Lunar New Year. Groups of children get together early in the morning to visit homes and gather items such as New Year decorations, rice, soybeans, and sweets. It features elderly men holding up wooden gods and goddesses at their front doors. Everyone sings a song of deities that protect from disasters and evil saying, “This is the Sainokami deity. This is a great deity.” At the end, the New Year decorations as well as wooden gods and goddesses are placed into bamboo and straw containers to be burned in prayers for good health and good harvests for the year.Carried on shoulders to the stage, upholding sacred rules — a pure and formal traditional children’s danceThe Chigo Dance of Etchu is the collective name for the traditional dances performed by children (chigo) at Hofuku-ji Temple in Kurobe City, Kumano Shrine in Toyama City, and Kamo Shrine in Imizu City, all located in Toyama Prefecture. While there are subtle differences among the three dances, they all observe the same rule: the children must not touch the ground until the dance is over. With their faces painted white, the children are brought to the stage on the shoulders of adults, without ever setting foot on the ground. This sacred dance, passed down over many years, is performed under strict and formal traditions. The sight of the children dancing leaves a solemn and lasting impression on all who witness it.Date:Every year on the Sunday just before (or on) January 15Place:Muramachi District, Uwano, Nyuzen TownTrain: About 15 min. on foot from Nyuzen Station on the Ainokaze Toyama RailwayCulture Division, Executive Committee, Nyuzen Town Board of EducationEvery year, 3rd Sunday of April: Hofuku-ji Temple (About 15 minutes by car from “Kurobe I.C.” on the Hokuriku Expressway)0765-54-2764 (Kurobe City Lifelong Learning Division)Every year, August 25: Kumano Shrine (About 20 minutes by car from “Toyama I.C.” on the Hokuriku Expressway)076-466-3320 (Kumano Shrine Chigo Dance Preservation Association)Every year, September 4: Kamo Shrine (About 15 minutes by car from “Kosugi Station” on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway)0766-59-2503 (Shimomura Kamo Shrine)開催日:毎年1月15日直前(または当日)の日曜場所:入善町上野邑町地区電車:あいの風とやま鉄道「入善駅」より徒歩約15分入善町教育委員会事務局 0765-72-3858法福寺法福寺毎年4月第3日曜:法福寺(北陸自動車道「黒部I.C」より車で約15分)0765-54-2764(黒部市生涯学習課)毎年8月25日:熊野神社(北陸自動車道「富山I.C.」 The wooden gods and goddesses that are said to bear the burden of the evil are burned until there is nothing left but ashes.
