Dancing through the night to the glow of sunrise! Bon dances performed without instruments and only vocal accompanimentThe Niino Bon Dance is a three-day event that begins at 9 pm and ends at 6 am. This Bon dance does not use any musical instruments, only cues from the choreographer and replies from the dancers. The first and second days end with a song, “Shall we go home before we hinder tomorrow’s work?” With that, the circle of dancers disbands reluctantly. Then comes the final night. The dance begins with “Sukuisa” and continues throughout the night. As the sky begins to pale, the faceted lanterns are sent off with the god’s farewell dance, bringing the event to a close.Boiling water and dancing at a shrine in mid-winter! A festival of resurrection to entertain the gods all throughout the night.A festival of resurrection where gods from across the country are invited to be entertained in mid-winter, when daytime is the shortest and vitality is at its lowest. It is held on a different day for each shrine at various settlements in the Tohyama Valley. Although it differs from shrine to shrine, the events include one in prayer for good health as water is boiled in a cauldron, and a dance for purifying the place as evening approaches. When the gods from across the country are sent back in the middle of the night, gods of the villages and the enshrined gods appear in masks.
