On January 15 at around 8:30 p.m., villagers who try to set fire to the shrine pavilion over 10 meters in height have a fierce struggle with men in their critical ages who try to stop it. The attacks with lit torches and those who try to protect the shrine pavilion look just like a real fight. The climax of the festival is after 10:00 p.m. when the flames enter the shrine pavilion and become intense. It is said that you will not catch a cold for the next year if you bake rice cakes with the coals of the burnt shrine pavilion and eat them the following morning.Buddhist prayers and hymns echo through the hall! An ethereal world woven with stillnessThe Atobe Dancing Buddhist Prayer, a ritual performed in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, is held in a dojo area set up in the main hall of Saihoji Temple. Two drummers take the lead, and eight dancers move around counterclockwise while bowing and chanting “Namu Amida Butsu, thank you.” The dance gradually becomes more intense, and by the end of the performance, the dancers are jumping back and forth from side to side.
