Osuwa Daiko drumming is a folk art originally created at Suwa Shrine as part of rituals to pray for a bountiful harvest and ward off disease. Its origins date back to the Sengoku Period, when Takeda Shingen began to use wadaiko drums to intimidate his enemies, as well as a means of ordering his troops. Under his command, Shingen had a group known as the “Osuwa 21 Drums”, whose job was to play war drums. The unit is believed to be the forerunner of today’s Osuwa Daiko drumming. Subsequent to Takeda’s demise, this form of drumming took root in the Suwa region as kagura drumming. Though it was perpetuated for some time, it eventually declined. Later, Daihachi Oguchi (wadaiko performer, Osuwa Daiko drumming head family), developed a musical style where wadaiko drumming takes the lead (ensemble wadaiko), by deciphering old musical scores and referring to the original formation of taiko drumming (21 people in three groups of seven), and at the same time recreated musical pieces. These efforts lead to the completion of today’s Osuwa Daiko drumming in 1951. Some typical examples include “Suwa Ikazuchi”, “Isamikoma”, “Hiryusandangaeshi,” and “Ashura.” In addition, with the goal of popularizing wadaiko music, stepping up cultural interchange through wadaiko, and encouraging the cultivation of aesthetic sensibilities, wadaiko teams have energetically expanded not only around Japan but also overseas in areas such as teaching, training, and establishment of schools. There are now 600 such teams in Japan and other countries. They also collaborate with famous musicians in Japan and abroad.
