A sacred puppet dance beneath cherry blossoms—said to be Japan’s oldest puppet theaterThis traditional puppet dance, said to have originated in the medieval period, has been preserved and handed down by the local people. From Tenzushi Shrine to Suzunomiya Suwa Shrine, a procession of nine puppets—considered sacred deities (goshintai)—makes its way, and a dance is performed as an offering in front of the worship hall of Suzunomiya Suwa Shrine as a prayer for a good harvest and the safety of the region. The stage is a circular enclosure made of curtains called Ofunegakoi. Spectators view the performance from the outside, watching as the puppets are raised above the curtain. Beneath the cherry trees in full bloom, the puppets move elegantly—and at times dynamically—to the sounds of drums and flutes. Moved by intricate karakuri mechanisms, the puppets appear almost alive. When the performance ends, the puppets leave the Ofunegakoi and return once again to Tenzushi Shrine. The mighty Takeda army has transcended time and is back! The largest recreation of a warrior procession in the worldShingen Takeda was a great general during the Warring States period. The Shingen-ko Festival is held in celebration of his posthumous influence and makes you feel as if you went back in time to the flowery Warring States period in the Kofu Basin, where there are many cherry and peach blossoms. The warrior procession that authentically recreates how he fought in the Battles of Kawanakajima is held from Saturday evening. Each year, Shingen and his 24 generals exchange sake cups as part of their deployment ceremony. Armored troops then deploy for battle and proceed valiantly in front of Kofu Station and other locations.Date:The Sunday immediately before or on April 10 each yearPlace:Tenzushi Shrine and Suzunomiya Suwa ShrineFrom JR Kofu Station, take the Yamanashi Kotsu bus and get off at “Yamashiro Elementary School”; Tenzushi Shrine is about a 5-minute walk.Historical and Cultural Heritage Division, Kofu City Board of EducationDates: Every year from Friday to Sunday before the anniversary of Shingen-ko’s passing (April 12)Place:Various locations within the city including Maizuru Castle ParkTrain: About 5 min. on foot from JR Kofu Station (Maizuru Castle Park)Shingen-ko Festival Executive Planning Committee [inside the Yamanashi Tourism Organization]開催日:毎年4月10日直前、または当日の日曜場所:天津司神社、鈴宮諏訪神社電車・バス:JR「甲府駅」より山梨交通バスに乗車、「山城小学校」停留所より徒歩約5分(天津司神社)甲府市教育委員会 歴史文化財課 055-223-7324開催日:毎年信玄公の命日(4月12日)前の金〜日曜日場所:舞鶴城公園など市内各所電車:JR「甲府駅」より徒歩約5分(舞鶴城公園)信玄公祭り実行委員会 [(公社)やまなし観光推進機構内]055-231-2722お囃子に合わせてささらや太鼓、鼓(つづみ)を鳴らすかすかな所作など、素朴ながらも神秘的な人形の動きをお見逃しなく。Be sure not to miss the subtle yet mystical puppet movements, such as the gentle playing of the sasara, drums, and hand drums (tsuzumi) in harmony with the festival’s music.風・林・火・山の旗を掲げた1,000名超の参加者が戦国武者姿で集結し、騎馬と共に行進する様は圧巻。Over 1,000 troops from various locations in the prefecture with the Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan banner gather together.
