The “Niigata Geta Soh-Odori”, which is the centerpiece of the Niigata Soh-Odori, is based on a Bon Odori dance that existed in Niigata during the Edo period (1603-1868). About 300 years ago, there was a festival in Niigata where people danced for four days and four nights. People passing by on the Kitamae boat, looking up at the night sky burning red with bonfires on the night of the festival, thought it was so gorgeous that they would ask, “Is the capital Kyoto or Niigata?” This shows just how lively the entire town was. It is said that in those days, people wore koashida (high geta) and colorful kimonos, and danced an impromptu dance to the rhythm of taru-kinuta (barrel drum culture unique to Niigata). The “Niigata Geta Soh-Odori” is a revival of Niigata's vitality and unique festival culture not found in other regions. There are four main types of dances in this dance (men's dance, women's dance, children's dance, and maturity dance (a dance performed by many people who mainly reached the age of maturity)), and they continue to dance one after the other, taking turns.
