They are crafted with the technologies of our ancestors, made better with more modern techniques, including the fact that they are designed to fly in the direction of one’s adversaries.る。大凧の大きさは縦7m、横5mで畳24畳分の大きさがあり、これを揚げる凧綱は、元綱と呼ばれ、径2.5cm、長さ130m、重さ40kgあり、日本麻を、名人でも100日余をかけて撚りあげるもので、凧合戦の勝敗を大きく左右する。中ノ口川の両岸から大凧を揚げ、空中で絡ませて川に落とし、相手の凧綱が切れるまで引き合う勇壮な大凧合戦だ。大空を舞う巨大な凧や、堤防の下まで続く大勢の人々が力いっぱいに綱を引き合う様子は迫力満点。約300年前、中ノ口川の堤防改修工事の完成祝いに白根側の人が凧を揚げたところ、対岸の西白根側に落ちて田畑を荒らしてしまい、それに腹を立てた西白根側の人が対抗して凧を白根側に叩きつけたことが起源とされている。各組の作り手がそれぞれに独自の工夫を凝らすことによって、大凧合戦の一層の盛り上がりにつながり、地域の振興に大きく貢献している。Participants fly their huge kites on both banks of the riverA competition of huge kites, flown until the ropes breakThe Shirone Giant Kite Battle, which has been held since the Edo period (1603-1868), is a community-participatory event that has been passed down through the generations with the united efforts of local residents. The size of each kite is 7 m in length and 5m in width, which is equivalent to 24 tatami mats. The kite’s rope is called motozuna, and is 2.5 cm in diameter, 130 m in length, and weighs 40 kg. Even a master rope maker needs 100 days to make this Japanese hemp rope, which greatly influences the outcome of the kite battle. In this kite competition, participants fly their kites from both banks of the Nakanokuchigawa River, crashing into each other in mid-air and bringing each other down until the rope of one of the kites breaks. Watching the many participants, lined up all the way to the embankment, dynamically pulling the ropes of these giant kites in the sky is truly an amazing sight to see. Approximately 300 years ago, people on the Shirone side flew kites to commemorate the completion of the Nakanokuchigawa River embankment. One of the kites sparked trouble when it fell into the Nishishirone area, on the opposite bank of the river. Angry residents then retaliated by bringing their own kites to the Shirone side. This incident is believed to be the origin of this event.
