The same type of Tsunotsuki Bullfighting event is currently held in Ehime, Shimane, Kagoshima, and Okinawa prefectures in the west, all of which are island areas. It is rare to find two such locations on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu, as in Yamakoshi and Ojiya. Cattle are strong-legged and able to withstand cold and roughage, and have long been valuable workers for transportation and farming. It is said that “bulls' horns pounding” took root as a pastime for people in close relationship with their owners, and is characterized by the fact that it always ends up in a draw so that the bulls do not get hurt. The scene of men, called “seko,” who go between the horns of the bulls and seize the bulls as they clash violently with each other is also a spectacle to behold. The local enthusiasm for the resumption of the bullfighting as a symbol of recovery from the Chuetsu Earthquake, which struck Niigata Prefecture in October 2004, became a source of motivation and courage for the recovery efforts.
