Valiant bamboo teasers heat up the winter in Itoigawa and Oumi!As the new year dawns, Oumi in Itoigawa begins a traditional Little New Year’s Festival in which the district is divided into east and west to compete against each other. Young people, their waists tied with sacred ropes and faces covered with makeup, circle around the erected bamboos while singing “Butterfly, heron butterfly, perch on the green leaves” to boost morale. Eventually, the bamboo is lowered, crossed over each other, and the participants hold onto both bamboos like a tug-of-war and pull with all their might. The match lasts three rounds. The excitement of the audience reaches its peak as the two performers put all their strength into pulling the bamboo with great vigor.One of Japan’s Three Great Eccentric Festivals, with over 1,200 years of history—male performers’ fiery energy swirls in the freezing nightEvery year on the first Saturday of March, the Hadaka Oshi-ai Festival, held in the heavy snowfall region of Echigo, is counted as one of Japan’s three great eccentric festivals. The festival reaches its climax in the final event called Sasara-suri. The sasara is an ancient musical instrument made of bamboo. The man of the year (toshi-otoko) rubs the sasara while leading a chant, advancing toward Bishamondō. Surrounding him, bare-chested men form multiple circles, chanting “Sanyo, Sanyo” as they march in unison.
