A single puppet is operated by three people in a coordinated manner: the master, the left puppeteer, and the foot puppeteer. It is characterized by a unique technique called teppo-zashi, in which the puppet's head is manipulated as if it were holding a gun. The teppo-zashi manipulation technique is different from that of bunraku. The repertoire includes Ehon Taikoki and Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami, among others. The narrator, shamisen player, and puppeteers work together to act out a single story. Sagami puppet theater now has five venues: Hayashi-za and Hase-za (Atsugi), Shimonaka-za (Odawara), Maetori-za (Hiratsuka), and Ashigara-za (Minamiashigara), which together make up the the Sagami Puppet Theatre Association. Every year, the five troupes come together to hold the Sagami Puppet Theater Competition, showcasing their traditional techniques.
