Please check the latest information before planning your visit.Light a lamp in the heartOdawara used to be a post town, and “Odawara Chochin (lanterns)” started when “Jinzaemon”, a lantern maker in Odawara, made foldable and portable lanterns for travelers to walk safely at night on their way to Hakone. The top and bottom lids were made of sacred wood from Saijoji Temple on Mt. Daiyuzan to ward off evil spirits along the way, and because they were convenient to carry, they spread throughout the country. Odawara Chochin Odori (Odawara lantern dance) was created in the 1970s to promote and reaffirm the popularity of Odawara lanterns, with dancers moving rhythmically while holding them. The choreography is relatively easy to follow and is performed by many citizens, including the Odawara Chochin Odori Preservation Society. The Odawara Chochin Festival features “Odawara Chochin Odori” and “Fuuma Ninja Demonstration” on the stage in the Ninomaru Plaza of Odawara Joshi Park, “Jichikai Mikoshi will parade majestically around the Joshi Park, and booths selling food, drinks and goods, and kitchen cars will be set up. The Odawara Chochin Art Fair will be held in the Honmaru Square of Joshi Park, where approximately 1,600 handmade lanterns created by Odawara City elementary school students will be on display.
