Folk performing arts passed down at Yokohama's oldest shrineThe Rice-Field Festival, a tradition preserved in Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama City, is a simple preliminary celebration in which people sing and dance to the tune of “Kami Hogiuta,” a song with elegant lyrics and verses, to pray for a bountiful harvest and prosperity for their descendants in the coming year. It has been handed down since before the Kamakura period (1185-1333), but was discontinued in the 4th year of Meiji (1871) due to the wave of civilization and enlightenment that followed the Meiji Restoration. It is based on the traditions handed down by elderly people longing for the days of old. The chief priest of Tsurumi Shrine, the Tsurumi History Association, local volunteers, and intellectuals cooperated to unearth the “Kami Hogiuta” and a map of the festival from old documents that had been lying dormant in the storehouse of an old family home. After observing and training at the Mishima-taisha shrine's otauchi ceremony and at a rice-field playing ceremony in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, which is said to have spread from Tsurumi, and seeking guidance from a folklore specialist, the festival was revived in 1987 for the first time in over 110 years. Since then, on April 29 (Showa Day) every year, the performance is held in the precincts of Tsurumi Shrine, using imitation hoes, sickles, and other implements to enact a series of rice farming activities from the spring plowing to the harvesting of rice. Children also play the roles of oxen and maidens who prepare the rice paddies, and the unique dances of sacred horses and clowns excite the audience, making the festival an enjoyable experience. The entire community participates in the festival with brass band performances by local junior high school students, soran dancing by elementary school students, and booths by neighborhood associations, welfare facilities, and groups, all of which help to enliven the festival and create a lively and vibrant town while striving to pass on traditional culture. 045-501-4122Date: April 29 every yearPlace: Precincts of Tsurumi ShrineTrain: 3-min. walk from JR Tsurumi station, 4-min. walk from Keikyu Tsurumi stationTsurumi Shrine 045-501-4122伝統文化の復活を導いた郷土愛で田祭りを次世代へ伝える。Passing on the rice field festival to the next generation through the love of their hometown, which led to the revival of traditional culture. *The information provided is current as of the end of December 2025 (Reiwa 7).
