About 20 girls between the ages of 5 and 12 dressed in formal attire dance holding fans and chakkirako (woven bamboo). It is a simple folk performing art consisting of only authentic singing by adult women and the accompanying words of the dancers. The Misaki area has long been a fishing town, and the festival has been held as a prayer for good catches and prosperous business. The festival kicks off with a votive dance at Motomiya Shrine in the Hanagure district of Misaki, followed by dance offerings in front of Nakazaki Ryujin Shrine, Hanagure Ryugu Shrine, and on the grounds of Kainan Shrine. Afterwards, they give blessings by dancing in homes and shopping districts. There are six dances, which include forms called “Hatsuise,” “Chakkirako,” and “Kamakurabushi.” The graceful dances of the girls and the songs of the adults have been designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan.
