The festival initially attracted less than 2,000 spectators, but has grown to become a “summer tradition in Tokyo” that attracts about 10,000 dancers and a total of about one million spectators over the two days of the festival. This success has had an important economic impact, with some restaurants reporting sales that are ten or more times higher than usual. In fact, on the day of the festival, the number of visitors extends not only to Koenji, but also to the neighboring areas of Asagaya and Nakano. In addition, local shopping associations as well as neighborhood associations collaborate in the implementation of Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori, contributing to the promotion of commerce and a sense of unity in the entire community. Furthermore, the activities of “Team Happiness,” a volunteer team consisting mainly of university students, in cooperation with local elementary and junior high school students, have become meaningful for the development of young people. In recent years, the festival has attracted many tourists from abroad, including Taiwan, and has grown into a tool for disseminating Japanese traditions and culture overseas.
