In 1968, the name was changed to “Hachioji Festival” and each town council officially joined in pulling floats. In 2002, the festival was reborn as a traditional festival centering on “floats and portable shrines,” which had been held since the mid-Edo period, and became the prototype of the present festival. The following year, the festival received the Utilization Award of the Local Traditional Performing Arts Awards. In addition to the 11 floats designated as Tangible Cultural Properties by Hachioji City, the festival features 19 elaborately carved floats that make a heroic two-kilometer parade along Koshu-kaido road. The festival has come to attract a total of more than 800,000 visitors over the three days.
