It should come as no surprise that it is counted amongst Japan’s major three festivalsAlong with the Gion Festival of Kyoto and the Tenjin Festival of Osaka, this is one of Japan’s three major festivals. It is also known as the Tenka Festival as a reference to the fact that the Edo-period shoguns watched the mikoshi portable shrines of this festival when they were brought into the city. Held every two years, this festival involves the parading of a shrine deity from its main location through Tokyo in a portable shrine. A total of 500 people wearing elaborate court attire depart Hie Shrine together with two mikoshi portable shrines with phoenix ornaments, one mikoshi portable shrine, and six other floats. This festival truly looks like the traditional painting of a royal procession, taking an entire day to wind through areas such as the National Theater, Imperial Palace Sakashitamon Gate, Nihonbashi Hie Shrine, Ginza, just to name a few.Dates: Every year from June 7 to 17 ※ Jinkosai festival is held in the even-numbered yearsPlace:Hie Jinja Shrine and surrounding districtsTrain: About 3 min. on foot (to Hie Jinja Shrine) from Tokyo Metro Akasaka StationHie Jinja Shrine開催日:毎年6月7日~6月17日※本祭は偶数年に開催場所:日枝神社、周辺市街地電車:東京メトロ「赤坂駅」より徒歩約3分(日枝神社)日枝神社 03-3581-24712年に一度の本祭「神幸祭」での祭礼行列は、天下泰平の象徴である「諫鼓鶏(かんこどり)」の山車を先頭に、花山車、美少年山車などが長さ300mにわたって盛大に続く。The festival floats are lead by the kanko-dori (bird image) sitting atop a drum, a symbol of peace in the world, followed by the flower floats, a float occupied by young boys, among others, stretching some 300 meters in total.
