The streets erupt with a thrilling mikoshi (portable shrine) procession and other events! An annual festival at Ookunitama Shrine, which boasts a history going back around 1,900 yearsThis annual festival is held at Ookunitama Shrine, an ancient complex said to have been built during the year 111 on the Western calendar. Long ago, all the streetlights were extinguished during the mikoshi procession, which is why it is called the Darkness Festival. This festival features various Shinto rituals and other events held over a seven-day period, including the Komakurabe (horse-riding) ritual on May 3, during which four goshinme (sacred horses) race down the former Koshu Kaido highway. One major highlight of the festival is the mikoshi procession, which is held on May 5 starting at 6:00 pm. Eight mikoshi are carried through the streets, accompanied by thunderous large taiko drum sounds and excited shouts (“Oisa! Oisa”), building the excitement of the festival to its climax. An extravagant procession traveling through a downtown area of Tokyo! A shogun’s festival that was under the aegis of the Edo Shogunate. This festival is held every other year at Kanda Shrine. The Kanda Festival, which was famous throughout Japan during the Edo period, is one of Japan’s three greatest festivals. During the Jinkōsai festival, which is held on Saturday, a procession that includes the hōren (imperial carriages) of Onamuchi no Mikoto (Daikoku-sama), Sukuna Hikona no Mikoto (Ebisu-sama), and Taira no Masakado no Mikoto as well as mikoshi (portable shrines) travels through Kanda, Nihonbashi, Marunouchi, Akihabara, and other locations. On Sunday, during the Mikoshi Miyairi event (the entry of portable shrines into the shrine grounds), town-specific portable shrines form a procession, surrounded by enthusiastic local people. In addition, on May 15, the Reitaisai festival is held to pray for the happiness of shrine worshipers as well as prosperity and peace in Japan.Date: Every year from April 30 to May 6Place:Ookunitama ShrineTrain: About 5 minutes of foot from Fuchu Station, which is on the Keio LineOokunitama ShrineDates: Mid-May in the odd-numbered yearPlace:Kanda ShrineTrain: About 5 min. on foot from Ochanomizu Station on the JR / Tokyo Metro LinesKanda Shrine開催日:毎年4月30日から5月6日場所:大國魂神社電車:京王線「府中駅」より徒歩約5分大國魂神社042-362-2130開催日:奇数年の5月中旬場所:神田明神電車:JR・東京メトロ「御茶ノ水駅」より徒歩約5分神田明神03-3254-07535月4日の「太鼓の響宴」では、口径約2mにも及ぶ「御先拂大太鼓」をはじめ大太鼓が大鳥居前に揃い、地鳴りのような音を轟かせる。During the Taiko no Kyoen (drum performance) on May 4, large taiko drums that include a gigantic osakibarai drum, which boasts a diameter of around two meters, are lined up in front of the large torii gate, where they fill the air with thunderous sounds.平安装束をまとった人々を従え、鳳輦(ほうれん)や神輿が華々しく行進する「神幸祭」。夕方には御輿・武者行列などの附け祭が追加される。Horen and the portable version of the main shrine in a procession with people in costumes of the Heian period during the “Jinkosai” festival.
