Long ago, all the streetlights were extinguished during the mikoshi procession, which is why it is called the Darkness Festival. This festival features various Shinto rituals and other events held over a seven-day period, including the Komakurabe (horse-riding) ritual on May 3, during which four goshinme (sacred horses) race down the former Koshu Kaido highway. One major highlight of the festival is the mikoshi procession, which is held on May 5 starting at 6:00 pm. Eight mikoshi are carried through the streets, accompanied by thunderous large taiko drum sounds and excited shouts (“Oisa!
