The tasks of rice-planting throughout the year are enacted together with chanting, for the purpose of calming and inspiring the spirits of the rice paddy. For the Ta-Asobi of Itabashi ward’s Tokumaru Kitano Shrine, a bamboo fence is set up in a square on the shrine grounds on the night of February 11th every year. Green bamboo holds Shinto ropes in four corners, while drums are placed in the center to represent a rice paddy. The year-long rice-making process is then enacted. Meanwhile, the Ta-Asobi of the same ward’s Akatsuka Suwa Shrine, similarly to the Tokumaru Ta-Asobi, is held every year on the shrine grounds on the night of February 13th. The ritual has been almost completely preserved in its original form, a rarity in the present day. For this reason, the Ta-Asobi of these two shrines, together known as “Itabashi Ta-Asobi,” was named a National Important Intangible Folk Asset in 1976.
