A festival revolving around floats and musical performances began to be held in the Kyoho era and boasts a tradition spanning more than 300 years. This Sawara Grand Festival is held in the city center, and made up of the summer festival (Yasaka Shrine Gion Festival) in July and the autumn festival (Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival) in October. It is known as one of the three major float festivals in the Kanto region. Ten floats are pulled in the summer festival and 14 in the autumn festival. The ranbiki procession of floats is pulled along a predetermined route by each township, and the kyokubiki no-no-ji-mawashi curved pulling, the highlight of the float pulling, are majestic and powerful. Sawara Bayashi is played while the floats are being pulled around. The music of the Sawara festival is unique in that it mainly consists of emotional melodies, and the musicians who play for the floats play flutes, large hand drums, small hand drums, large drums, small drums and small gongs.
