Dashi floats and yatai (floats with roofs) decorated with gorgeous carvings and ornaments are displayed, and the city is usually crowded with people every year.勝寺のご本尊「不動明王」の本地仏である奥之院に奉安された「大日如来」に五穀豊穣、万民豊楽・諸願成就を祈願する「成田山祇園会」と、成田周辺の町内が一体となり行われている夏祭り。江戸時代中期の享保年間にはすでに行われていたとの記録があり、300年以上の歴史がある。祭礼期間中は、大日如来をご尊体とした御輿渡御や、10台の豪華絢爛な山車・屋台が賑やかなお囃子の音色や威勢の良い掛け声とともに、成田山へ続く参道やその周辺一帯を巡行する。夜間には山車・屋台がライトアップされ、昼とは異なる幽玄な姿を楽しめる。毎年3日間で約45万人の人々が訪れ、成田の街はお祭りムード一色に染まる。Narita Gion Festival, a summer tradition in NaritaThe Narita Gion Festival, a summer tradition in Narita, is held every year in early July in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture. This summer festival is held in conjunction with the Naritasan Gion Association, which prays to the Dainichi Nyorai Buddha enshrined in Okunoin, the main sanctuary of Fudo Myoo, the principal deity of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, for a good harvest, prosperity for all people, fulfillment of various wishes, and the townspeople of the Narita area. The festival has a history of more than 300 years, with records indicating that it was already held during the Kyoho period in the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868). During the festival period, a portable shrine with Dainichi Nyorai as its principal deity and 10 gorgeous floats and “yatai” parade along the approach to Narita-san and the surrounding area, with the lively sounds of musical accompaniment and vigorous shouting.
