In Narita City, Odori Hanami is held every year on April 3 in the seven former towns that now form the town in front of Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple. Odori Hanami is said to have been handed down from the Genroku era (1688-1704) and has a history of over 300 years. In 1964, it was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by Chiba Prefecture. Each town has a women's group called Nyoninko, and the Narita Odori Hanami Preservation Society, which consists of Nyoninko, holds the Odori Hanami festival on a rotating basis. The Nyoninko gather at Sannomiya Habu Shrine, Narita's Shinto shrine, in matching kimono, according to the annual turn of the year, which comes around once every seven years. They visit 16 shrines and Buddhist temples enshrined in each town, and offer a dance called “Miroku Odori” at each place as a prayer to the gods and Buddha for comfort, driving away evil spirits, and a good harvest. The Nyoninko of each of the seven former Narita towns take turns keeping the “Okago” (sacred object) for one year.
