Hina dolls donated from across the country all lined up!Festivals full of hina dolls are held at various locations throughout the town, including Tomisaki Shrine.During this festival, which is a traditional hallmark of spring in Katsuura City, visitors are met by hina dolls that adorn the stone steps of Tomisaki Shrine, the special tiered hina doll stand at Kakuoji Temple, various shops along the shopping streets, and other locations. This festival was first held in 2001, when around 7,000 hina dolls were received from Katsuura Town, Tokushima Prefecture, through the nationwide Katsuura network. Küste, the Katsuura City Arts and Culture Center, boasts the largest number of exhibits related to this event, with around 8,000 hina dolls. In addition to Japan’s largest kyōhōbina doll exhibit, a giant tiered hina doll stand is set up over the visitor seats in the great hall, where the sight of around 5,000 dolls neatly lined up is really something to experience.Witness an impressive earth-shaking dance!Experience scenes from Hell revived on stageaIn Japan, August 16 is said to be the day that Hell’s cauldron opens, and actors wearing masks mark the occasion every year by performing in a hellish play. A total of seven scenes are performed, including Sai no Kawara (a mythical river of the dead), Kamaire (boiling the dead in a cauldron), and Shide no Yama (the Mountain of Death), which depict suffering in Hell as well as salvation. As the high-pitched sound of the nyōhachi (a type of traditional Japanese cymbal) rings out, the curtain rises, and a red demon appears, furiously striking the floor with a staff as a black demon stomps the stage. For the audience, the sight of this thrilling performance is nothing less than riveting. The only instrument used during the play is the nyōhachi, which helps to heighten the tension even more.Dates: Every year from late-February to early-MarchPlace:Tomisaki Shrine, among othersTrain: About 10 min. on foot (to Tomisaki Shrine) from JR Katsuura StationKatsuura Big Hina Matsuri Executive CommitteeDate:Every year on August 16Place:Kosaiji templeCar: About 10 min. from JR Yokoshiba StationSocial Culture Division, Yokoshibahikari Town Board of Education開催日:毎年2月下旬〜3月上旬場所:遠見岬神社 他電車:JR「勝浦駅」より徒歩約10分(遠見岬神社)かつうらビッグひな祭り実行委員会 0470-73-6641開催日:毎年8月16日場所:広済寺車:JR「横芝駅」より車で約10分横芝光町教育委員会 社会文化課0479-84-1358遠見岬神社は祭りを象徴する特別な場所。空にも届きそうな60段の石段が、約1,800体ものひな人形で朱色と金色に染め上げられる様子は圧巻。Tomisaki Shrine is a special place that serves as an icon of festivals.
