It is also known as the “Silkworm Festival” or the “Shimotsuki Grand Festival.” This festival is described as the annual meeting between the goddess of Chichibu Shrine and the male deity of Mount Buko. Counted among Japan's Three Great Float Festivals alongside Kyoto's Gion Festival and Hida's Takayama Festival, this grand annual festival of Chichibu Shrine has been cherished for nearly 300 years. From morning, magnificent floats (2 Kasaboko and 4 Yatai) are paraded through the streets to the rhythm of spirited Yatai music. Highlights include the Yatai-shibai theater performances staged on the floats’ protruding platforms and the Giri-mawashi, where floats weighing dozens of tons are turned by the rhythm of small drums. The excitement peaks at night. The sight of the floats being paraded against a backdrop of fireworks is truly spectacular.
